LIRR To Provide Extra Service On Friday

The MTA Long Island Rail Road has announced it will be providing extra service for the start of Good Friday & Passover. Here are the complete details:

The Long Island Rail Road will provide additional eastbound service on Friday, April 3 for customers leaving work early in observance of Passover and Good Friday. The railroad will operate a regular weekday schedule with 10 additional trains departing Penn Station between 1:46 p.m. and 3:48 p.m. There will be four additional trains on the Babylon Branch, three on the Port Jefferson Branch, one on the Port Washington Branch, one on the Ronkonkoma Brach and one on the Far Rockaway Branch. In addition, one other Port Jefferson train will make an extra stop at Jamaica
The extra afternoon departures from Penn Station are as follows:

Babylon Branch:

2:22 p.m. express to Rockville Centre, then all stops to Babylon

2:32 p.m. express to Lynbrook, then all stops to Babylon

3:00 p.m. stopping at Jamaica, Rockville Centre, then all stops to Babylon

3:31 p.m. express to Rockville Centre, then all stops to Babylon

Port Jefferson Branch:

2:08 p.m. stopping at Jamaica, Mineola, Carle Place, then all stops to Huntington

2:29 p.m. stopping at Forest Hills, Kew Gardens, Jamaica, New Hyde Park, then all stops to Huntington

3:24 p.m. stopping at Jamaica, Mineola, Westbury and Hicksville

The 2:52 pm train from Huntington to Port Jefferson will instead originate from Jamaica at 2:15 p.m.

Port Washington Branch (to Great Neck):

3:40 p.m. stopping at Woodside, Flushing Main St., then all stops to Great Neck

Ronkonkoma Branch:

1:46 p.m. stopping at Woodside, Jamaica, Mineola, Hicksville, then all stops to Ronkonkoma.

Far Rockaway Branch:

3:48 p.m. express to Locust Manor, then all stops to Far Rockaway

MTA Spring Holiday Service Plan Info

With 3 major upcoming Spring Holidays about to occur, the MTA has sent out word on service plan information. Here are the details:

On Easter Sunday, April 5, all MTA services plan to operate on a normal Sunday schedule. For this Friday, April 3, which is Good Friday and the first night of Passover, the New York City Subway and Staten Island Railway will operate on regular schedules. However, there will be some adjustments to MTA services as noted below.

New York City Buses

On Friday, April 3, Staten Island buses will operate on a reduced weekday schedule. There will be no limited-stop bus service in Staten Island on the S81, S84, S86, S90, S91, S92, S94, S96 and S98 bus routes.

Metro-North Railroad

On Friday, April 3, Metro-North will operate a regular weekday schedule, although with financial markets closed, ridership is expected to be down 30-to-40%.

Normally on Passover eve, Metro-North adds train cars to regularly scheduled outbound trains in the early afternoon from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., so there is capacity for those who want to get home for sundown. But since this is also Good Friday, and ridership is typically significantly lower, no added cars are planned.

Former MTA Union Boss Stole Nearly 50K

I have many fond memories of time spent at the NYC OTB from my teenage years until it finally shut down a couple of years ago. Safe to say the fond memory sentiment will not be shared by former MTA Union leader John Earvin who is charged with stealing nearly $50K in members dues. Stephen Rex Brown of the New York Daily News has more:

The former boss of a tiny union representing MTA inspectors pocketed at least $48,012 of members’ money, some of which he spent at Off-Track Betting sites, Manhattan federal prosecutors charged Tuesday.

John Earvin, president of the United Federation of Law Enforcement Officers from 2007 to 2010, set up a secret bank account of union money that only he had access to, according to an indictment.

On 18 occasions, the 67-year-old withdrew money from the account using cash machines at OTBs throughout New York State, prosecutors said.

The alleged actions of Mr. Earvin are unacceptable. He should be punished to the fullest extent of the law including having to refund the members he stole from. Anything less will not be good enough!
