Metro-North Thanksgiving 2014 Service Plan

Here is the Thanksgiving 2014 service plan for the Metro-North:

Metro-North Railroad is providing special service and extra trains throughout the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Give thanks that you can take the train and avoid traffic, tolls, and all the other headaches that come with driving on one of the busiest travel holidays of the year.

Here’s a recipe for happy Thanksgiving travel: Buy your tickets in advance (like your turkey)and avoid long lines. If you plan a round-trip, buy a round trip ticket!

Thanksgiving is Metro-North’s busiest travel day of the year, and if you’re leaving New York after the parade, customers must show a ticket before boarding trains at Grand Central or Harlem-125th Street Station.

The good news is off-peak fares are in effect for the entire four-day holiday. Free parking is available at many stations. (Check for signs at stations, or go to mta.info/mnr or call 511 for details. Outside of New York, call 877-690-5114.)

On Wednesday, November 26, 22 early getaway trains depart Grand Central between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. and most trains will have extra cars. (Train times are shown in the November 9 timetable.) Wednesday night, because most people have left early, some evening trains may be cancelled or
combined, so be sure to check the timetable.

A special printed Thanksgiving holiday timetable covers Thursday, November 27, through Sunday, November 30. Copies are available in Grand Central Terminal and at outlying stations. Information also is available on line at mta.info/mnr

On Thanksgiving (Thursday, November 27), there are extra inbound trains for those heading to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Holiday Parade, which steps off at 9:00 a.m. at 81st Street & Central Park West and ends in front of the miracle on 34th Street. And after the extravaganza, there are plenty of outbound trains to get you home, or to the moveable feast.

On the day after Thanksgiving, Friday, November 28, also known as Black Friday, Metro-North will operate on a Saturday schedule with additional inbound trains in the morning and outbound trains in the afternoon to accommodate all those shoppers and those folks who must work on Friday.

Finally, on Saturday, November 29 and Sunday, November 30 we will provide regular weekend schedules with the usual Shoppers’ Specials trains, 13 on Saturday and four on Sunday.

WEST of HUDSON

Early getaway trains will operate on both the Port Jervis and Pascack Valley lines on Wednesday.

On the Port Jervis Line, there’s a 2:39 p.m. from New York’s Penn Station (2:45 p.m. departure from Hoboken), making all stops from Suffern through Port Jervis. (To accommodate this train, the 6:11p.m. departure from Hoboken will not operate.)

On the Pascack Valley Line, there’s a 2:51 p.m. from New York’s Penn Station (2:58 p.m. departure from Hoboken), making select stops in New Jersey before arriving at Pearl River, Nanuet, and Spring Valley. (To accommodate this train, the 7:20 p.m. departure from Hoboken will not operate.)

On Thursday, a regular holiday/weekend schedule will be in effect for both lines, with one additional round trip on the Port Jervis Line, which is shown in the November 9 timetable.

For those heading in to the parade, there will be a 6:22 a.m. departure from Port Jervis arriving in Hoboken at 8:30 a.m. (a connection at Secaucus Junction arrives at midtown New York’s Penn Station at 8:39 a.m.) and to get home, there’s a 12:13 p.m. departure from Hoboken (12:07 p.m. from New York’s Penn Station) that operates express to Suffern, then makes all stops to Port Jervis.

On Friday, a regular weekday schedule will be in effect, and on Saturday and Sunday, a regular weekend schedule will be in effect on both Port Jervis and Pascack Valley lines.

Critical Switch Work Suspends Service

Riders of the , & make note that service will be suspended for two weeks in Southern Brooklyn due to critical switch work. Here are the full details:

MTA NYC Transit will be performing a major switch renewal and maintenance related work on the BQF lines in Brooklyn. For two consecutive weeks beginning 11:00 p.m. Friday, November 21 until 5:00 a.m. Monday, December 1, F trains will be suspended in both directions between Coney Island-Stillwell Av and Avenue X, and Q trains will be suspended in both directions between Coney Island-Stillwell Av and Brighton Beach. Free shuttle buses will provide alternate service between Coney Island-Stillwell Av and all affected stations between Avenue X on the F line, and Brighton Beach on the BQ lines.

This critical switch renewal project south of the West 8 St-NY Aquarium subway station is essential to the safe operation of trains along the Sea Beach corridor. The switch was originally installed in 1987. In NYC Transit’s ongoing efforts to ensure the subway system remains in a state of good repair, workers will take advantage of the 24/7 uninterrupted access to this section of track to complete this vital maintenance project during the upcoming two week closure. Other maintenance work will also include the installation of new track panels along the elevated BQF line structure. This work is part of NYC Transit’s ongoing Capital Rebuilding Program aimed at upgrading and maintaining our tracks, stations and signal systems in order to continue to provide our customers with safe and reliable service.

We realize this will be an inconvenience to our customers, however this work is vital to improve the future reliability of service along the BQF lines. “We appreciate the community’s patience as we complete this important switch replacement project, and necessary track maintenance work. Our goal is to complete this work as quickly and efficiently as possible,.” said NYC Transit President Carmen Bianco.
