Port Jervis Riders Will Uses Buses Over Trains

The MTA just announced that Port Jervis customers will be using buses to replace 5 midday trains from July through October due to repairs in the Otisville Tunnel. Here are the complete details:

For three months beginning on July 15, workers will head into the 5,300-foot-long Otisville Tunnel on the Port Jervis Line to continue infrastructure improvements to the line by making repairs to the tunnel’s structure and its drainage systems.

To accommodate that work, customers who normally board select off-peak trains at Port Jervis will catch buses to Middletown/Town of Wallkill to connect with regularly scheduled trains. Customers from Otisville will not be impacted.

Five trains are being affected by the change, three Hoboken-bound trains and two Port Jervis-bound trains.

Middletown-bound buses will depart Port Jervis at:

• 9:20 a.m. – connecting at Middletown for the 9:49 a.m. departure for Hoboken

• 11:31 a.m. – connecting at Middletown for the 12 noon departure for Hoboken

• 1:28 p.m. – connecting at Middletown for the 1:57 p.m. departure for Hoboken

Port Jervis-bound buses will depart from Middletown at:

• 10:09 a.m. – arriving at Port Jervis at 10:39 a.m.

• 11:42 a.m. – arriving at Port Jervis at 12:13 p.m

Buses To Replace Pascack Valley Line Trains

Earlier this afternoon, the MTA announced that buses will replace off-peak midday trains on the Pascack Valley Line. Here are the complete details:

From July 13 through September 6, NJ TRANSIT workers will replace rail ties and perform other repair and upgrading work along the length of the Pascack Valley Line and will rebuild railroad crossings in Westwood and Hackensack.

To accommodate that work, on weekdays, buses will operate in lieu of off-peak mid-day trains (from approximately 8:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) between Spring Valley and Secaucus Junction, from Monday, July 15 to Friday, September 6. On Saturdays and Sundays, buses will operate all day between Spring Valley and Secaucus Junction, from Saturday, July 13 to Sunday, August 11.

Customers should allow an additional 30 to 60 minutes of travel time.

On weekends, customers with monthly or weekly passes between Spring Valley, Nanuet or Pearl River and Hoboken or Penn Station may use their pass to ride Hudson Line trains between Tarrytown and Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan.

LIRR To Run Extra Trains For MLB Events

Earlier today, the MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) announced it will be running extra trains for the MLB All-Star Extravaganza between July 14th & 16th. Here are the complete details via press release:

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced today that MTA Long Island Rail Road will provide extra train service direct to Citi Field during Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game and related festivities on Sunday, July 14, Monday, July 15, and Tuesday, July 16.

“This year, New York’s very own Citi Field will play host to the greatest ballplayers in the world at the 2013 Major League Baseball All-Star Game and we want to make sure fans who use the MTA have as smooth a ride as possible to and from the game,” Governor Cuomo said. “The MTA Long Island Rail Road will be ready with added train service for tens of thousands of fans heading to the ballpark to see the All-Stars play. I hope baseball fans will take advantage of this increased service by leaving their cars at home and taking the Long Island Rail Road to see the All-Star Game.”

LIRR Port Washington Branch trains will provide service every half-hour– and more frequently when necessary — to Mets-Willets Point Station to get fans to and from the events leading up to and including the 84th MLB All-Star Game. Fans traveling from Long Island on other LIRR branches can reach Citi Field by changing at Woodside, just a five-minute ride from the stadium, where the best players from the National League and American League will square off Tuesday night.

The extra LIRR service is in addition to MTA New York City Transit’s fast and frequent service to Citi Field on the 7 subway train, which will be supplemented with extra trains when necessary. The other events at Citi Field are the All-Star Futures Game and the All-Star Legends & Celebrity Softball Game on Sunday and All-Star Workout Day and Home Run Derby on Monday.

MTA Chairman and CEO Thomas F. Prendergast said, “The MTA’s mass transit network is the best way to get to the full schedule of All-Star Game events, beginning with the opening of the five-day All-Star Game FanFest at the Jacob Javits Convention Center on Friday, July 12. There’s no reason to sit in traffic when baseball fans can ride the MTA for an easy, comfortable ride to all the All-Star action.”

The LIRR and MTA New York City Transit subway and buses are also ready to serve those traveling to other MLB All-Star Game activities. NYC Transit’s 7 train operates to Mets-Willets Point Station right next to Citi Field and will provide special super-express 7 trains after the last out of the Home Run Derby and All Star Game, with trains stopping at 61st St.-Woodside, Queensboro Plaza, Court Square, 42nd St. Grand Central, 5th Avenue-Bryant Park and Times Square-42nd St.

LIRR President Helena Williams said, “The All-Star game will bring national attention to New York next week and the LIRR will be ready to provide extra service to get fans to Citi Field for the Home Run Derby on Monday and the All-Star game on Tuesday as well and to all the events leading up to the big game. Whether you are planning to attend the Fan Fest at the Javits Convention Center, the All-Star Charity Concert in Central Park on Saturday or the All-Star Red Carpet parade on Tuesday in the city, the LIRR is the fastest and most hassle-free way to go.”

Buy Your LIRR Tickets before Boarding the Train:

LIRR customers are encouraged to purchase round-trip tickets before boarding trains, as tickets bought onboard cost $6 more. Peak Fares are in effect on eastbound trains scheduled to depart from Penn Station between the hours of 4 PM and 8 PM on weekdays. Monthly and Weekly tickets to/from Fare Zone 1 are accepted for travel to/from Mets-Willets Point Station.

On weekends, fans boarding at Penn Station, Woodside, Flushing-Main Street, Murray Hill, Broadway, Auburndale, Bayside, Douglaston or Little Neck can save money by purchasing CityTicket, which is just $4 one way. CityTicket cannot be purchased onboard trains, and is valid only on the day purchased.

MTA Bus Driver Saves Man In The Bronx

In what is a polar opposite from the previous entry, MTA Bus Driver Victor Nacasio is a hero after saving a man in the Bronx who was having a seizure. Here is the story courtesy of News 12 The Bronx:

An MTA bus driver is being hailed as a hero after he helped save a man who was having a seizure.

Victor Nacasio sprang into action at the corner of East Fordham Road and Webster Avenue when he noticed a man violently shaking on a bench. Bystanders say Nacasio called 911 and stayed on the line until emergency workers arrived.

Photos snapped by passersby show Nacasio following the 911 dispatcher’s instructions and turning the man onto his side while trying to keep him calm.

The man, who is homeless, was taken to Saint Barnabas Hospital. Bystanders say he was able to walk to the ambulance on his own.

Nacasio had been on his break when the incident happened, and afterward, he got back to work.

A big kudos to Mr. Nacasio for springing into action & saving the life of a stranger. We always read or hear bad stories about MTA workers but here is just more proof to what I have always known, the force contains a lot of great people!

MTA Officer Commits Suicide In Brooklyn

Tragedy struck over the July 4th holiday weekend as an unnamed 53 year old MTA security officer committed suicide. Here is more in a brief report by Joe Kemp & Thomas Tracy of the New York Daily News:

An MTA security guard took her own life inside a Brooklyn subway station Saturday, police sources said.

The 53-year-old woman was assigned to protect a crew of workers maintaining MetroCard kiosks at the Flatbush Ave.- Brooklyn College station about 1 p.m. when she excused herself and went into a staff bathroom, according to sources.

Once inside, she pulled her service weapon and shot herself in the head, sources said.

No commuters witnessed the shooting, police sources said.

Calls to the MTA were not returned.

It is always unfortunate to find out that something could have led to a person making the choice to end their life. My condolences to the loved ones of this woman.
