LIRR To Offer Extra Eastbound Service Ahead Of Storm
Residents of Long Island are not looking forward to anymore snow coming down. Even though it will be nothing like last weekend’s storm, it is an unwelcome site. The LIRR will be trying to aid residents get home ahead of the storm by providing extra eastbound service this afternoon. Here are the details via the release I just received:

The extra trains will supplement the LIRR regular off-peak service. The eight additional trains will depart from Penn Station between 2:09 PM and 3:48 PM on the Babylon, Port Jefferson, Port Washington and Far Rockaway Branches. Also, a regularly scheduled train from Huntington destined for Port Jefferson will originate instead from Jamaica at 1:46 PM.

Metro-North PM & AM Update
Here is the latest update I received from the Metro-North just now:
In the aftermath of the Blizzard of 2013, restoration of service on MTA Metro-North Railroad is nearly complete with afternoon peak service today near normal and a full complement of trains on all lines with the exception of the Waterbury branch and three combined trains on the New Haven Line.
Beginning Wednesday morning, Metro-North will provide a regular weekday schedule, including resumption of all Waterbury Branch and Shore Line East trains.
This afternoon, the 5:17 PM to Harrison and the 5:20 PM to New Rochelle are combined, departing Grand Central at 5:20 PM and making all stops from Mount Vernon East to Harrison.
The 4:07 to New Haven and the 4:15 to New Haven are combined, departing Grand Central at 4:15, and making New Rochelle, Rye, and all stops from Rye to New Haven except Rowayton.
The 7:11 PM to Harrison is canceled. Customers may use the 6:45 PM train to Stamford or the 7:16 PM to Stamford instead. It is anticipated that the 7:16 PM to Stamford will be very crowded and customers should try to use the 6:45 PM train.
These changes were necessitated by a shortage of New Haven Line train cars, due to weather-related failures and an ongoing effort to dig out cars from yards that were buried under mounds of snow. These three trains were selected to affect the fewest number of customers.
Hudson and Harlem Line trains have been operating without car shortages, but most trains on the New Haven will continue be short one to two cars, which probably will cause standees.
About half the 50% of the New Haven Line fleet is brand-new M-8 cars, which are functioning very well in the snow. The oldest cars, the M-2s, also are functioning well because they have been through the Critical System Replacement program, which was intended to extend their useful lives until all 405 M-8 cars on order are delivered. The M-4 and M-6 cars have not been upgraded and about two-thirds of them are shopped due to high voltage electrical failures.
Customers should take care when traveling and allow for additional travel time and should use caution when entering and exiting trains, and on platforms and staircases.

Buses To Serve Metro-North Waterbury Branch
Just now the MTA sent word that buses will serve the Waterbury Branch. Here is what was sent out which basically repeated the previous post but with the addition of bus service:
On Monday morning, February 11, normal weekday train schedules will remain in effect on Metro-North Railroad’s Hudson and Harlem lines, as well as on the New Haven Line between Stamford and Grand Central Terminal.
And for the first time since the blizzard of 2013 hit, trains also will operate between New Haven and Stamford, but at about half of the normal weekday rush hour service level. Train service also will resume on the Danbury and New Canaan branches. Buses will serve the Waterbury branch.
On the Danbury Branch, four of the five regular trains will operate. The 6:18 a.m. departure from Danbury will not operate.
In addition, there are several minor changes in service between Stamford and New York. The 6:11 a.m. from Stamford is cancelled and customers who usually catch the 7:35 a.m. out of Port Chester (that also stops at Rye at 7:39 a.m.) will be accommodated on the local that leaves Stamford at 6:59 a.m. – within five minutes of their regular time.
Also, some of the east end trains that ordinarily stop at Greenwich are not running tomorrow.
Both the Haverstraw and Newburgh ferries and the Hudson Rail Link buses are running tomorrow.
All customers should use caution when entering/existing trains and on the platforms and stairs. New Haven Line customers should anticipate crowded trains.
A regular off-peak/midday schedule will be operated on all lines. The PM peak schedule for the outer New Haven Line is being developed.
Many Connecticut residents in the New Haven area, including Metro-North employees, may have trouble reaching their train stations and work locations because many local roads remain impassable.
Crews continued working all day and overnight to remove deep snow from yards in New Haven and Bridgeport and to clear the track switches that allow trains to change from one track to another. In addition to Metro-North forces, about 45 maintenance of way workers from New York City Transit rode a diesel train to Bridgeport and New Haven yards to assist in the clean up effort. Another crew of 45 workers were to arrive at about 9:30 pm to continue working in the yards.
There are two jet engine snow blowers at work and CDOT has sent two frontend loaders and several triple axle trucks to remove snow from the yards.
In addition, deep snow has to be removed manually from the roof of each train car so that the pantographs can go up and down. (The pantographs are the mechanical arms that capture electricity from the overhead catenary wires.)
Metro-North has been running empty trains up and down the line this evening to help clear switches, overhead wires and train roofs to ensure that the infrastructure and trains are operating safely and reliably after the three-day hiatus.
For specific schedules, please check http://mta.info/mnr or in New York City call 511. In Connecticut, call toll-free 877-690-5114
