Metro-North New Year’s Eve Service Plan Info

Here is the rundown for the MTA Metro-North Railroad in terms of their New Year’s Eve service plan information:

Metro-North offers fast, frequent service to and from Grand Central Terminal all day long and into the early morning hours of New Year’s Eve for celebrants travelling to Times Square and elsewhere in the Big Apple.

On New Year’s Eve Day, Metro-North will operate on a special Saturday schedule; for New Year’s Eve revelers, extra inbound afternoon/evening service and all-night outbound service will be provided on all three lines, the Hudson, Harlem and New Haven. Ridership during these periods is projected to be higher than last year, but is weather dependent.

On New Year’s morning 2012, only half of those people who came into the city for the festivities will be gone by 2 AM, when outbound service usually ends. So, outbound trains, both outer end express service and inner local service, will be provided all night. Overnight service also includes branch line service to Wassaic and New Canaan.

A regular Sunday schedule resumes at 5:35AM.

Advice to customers:

Buy an off-peak, round-trip ticket at your home station and avoid long lines in Grand Central, where there will be ticket collection at the train gate before boarding between midnight and 4:40AM. Each customer must have a ticket to board the train and will be sent back to the ticket windows or to the TVMs to purchase a ticket if they do not. (Elderly/disabled customers and families with small children will not be sent back to purchase a ticket. Conductor issued tickets will be sold at the gate or arrangements made on-board the train to issue the tickets.) In addition, there will be gate collection on inbound trains departing New Haven Station between noon and 8 PM.

When traveling with friends, buy a 10-trip, off-peak ticket and save.

Free parking available at most stations.

Alcohol is not allowed on board Metro-North trains, Grand Central and all railroad stations and is subject to confiscation by MTA Police.

Grand Central North exits will be closed on December 31, January 1 and January 2.

Grand Central Ticket Office will be open all night on NY’s Eve. There also are two dozen ticket vending machines in Grand Central, in five locations.

Special timetables for the New Year’s Weekend are available at Grand Central and outlying ticket offices and on the web at mta.info/mnr.

December monthly commutation tickets will be valid for travel on New Year’s morning between 12:00 Midnight and 6:30AM, without having the ticket cancelled or collected. It also will be accepted for one courtesy ride through 10 AM, Tuesday, January 3, 2012.

All tickets sold on trains will be at the higher on-board price.
