Extra Metro-North Service For New Year’s Eve
Once again, the MTA Metro-North Railroad will be providing extra service for New Year’s Eve. As a reminder, here is the complete information regarding service plans:
Trains will operate all night long on New Year’s Eve, Friday December 31, so take the train to the party and get home safe.
On Friday, Metro-North will operate on a Saturday schedule, but with extra trains in key periods.
For those who have to go to work, there will be additional trains during the morning inbound rush from 6 to 9 AM and outbound from 4 to 6 PM.
For revelers there will be plenty of additional inbound trains in the afternoon and evening for people heading to parties in the city. When it’s finally time to go home, there will be additional service in both directions into the wee hours of the morning.
Buy your round trip tickets at your boarding station and avoid lines in Grand Central after a night of partying! Travelers must show a ticket BEFORE boarding train at Grand Central after midnight.
And as in prior years, open containers of alcoholic beverages will not be allowed on trains, stations or platforms from noon on New Year’s Eve through noon on New Year’s Day. MTA Police will enforce this restriction.
On Saturday January 1, New Year’s Day, a Sunday schedule will be in effect.
On Sunday January 2, Metro-North also will operate on a regular Sunday schedule.
Metro-North’s regular weekday schedule resumes Monday January 3.
December monthly passes will be accepted for one courtesy ride through 10 AM Tuesday, January 4, 2011.
For service on New Year’s weekend, including Friday 12/31, Saturday 1/1 and Sunday 1/2, pick up our Special New Year’s Holiday Weekend timetable.

New Year’s Eve & Day Service Info
As a reminder, here is important service info for those planning to ride the buses or subways today. The service matches what was in place for Christmas Eve:
MTA New York City Transit and MTA Bus announced that on New Year’s Eve, Friday, December 31, buses and subways will run on a Saturday schedule. Customers who are traveling by bus or subway on New Year’s Eve should check Saturday schedules, lines and routes.
On subways, this means that certain routes like the No. 5 to Nereid Avenue, Nos. 6 and 7 express trains, the rush hour Rockaway Park A, the entire B, the 179th Street E, the M in Manhattan and Queens, the Q in Astoria and the Z skip-stop will not be running on Friday.
On buses, there are many routes that either do not operate on Saturdays, or do not run on part of the route or at certain hours. Some routes which formerly operated on Saturday no longer do, including the B2, B24, B69, Bx20, Bx34, Bx55, M8, M21, M50, Q31, Q76, S54, S76, X27 and X28.
NYC Transit is the best way for revelers to get to Times Square on New Year’s Eve to ring in the New Year and travel home afterwards. We recommend that customers purchase their MetroCards in advance. Following the festivities, trains on subway lines in and around Times Square will run every 8-12 minutes until approximately 3 a.m.
Customers heading to Times Square for the celebration should avoid using the Times Square-42nd Street complex, since they may not be allowed to exit onto the street. In addition, No. 1, N and R trains will begin bypassing the 50th Street and 49th Street stations from as early as 7:00 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. Customers are advised to use stations at 57th Street and 59th Street and walk to Times Square. Also, the 42nd Street-Grand Central (S) shuttle will operate all night.
We do not recommend revelers using buses to get to Times Square due to numerous closed streets; regular overnight bus service will be restored in the area when the streets reopen.
On New Year’s Day, Saturday, January 1, subways will run on a Saturday schedule and buses will operate on a Sunday schedule.

NYC Transit Wednesday Service Info
Lastly, here is the latest info for tomorrow’s commute in relation to NYC Transit:
The round the clock efforts of NYC Transit work crews have restored full service to the Rockaways and West End Line trains are expected to begin service again this evening. Work on the Canarsie Line is progressing to the point where we plan to resume full service by late morning Wednesday.
Work on the Brighton Line, Sea Beach Line and Franklin Ave Shuttle continues in the effort to restore service as quickly as possible. Wind driven snow drifts in excess of three to four feet in these locations have made it necessary to dig out the tracks by hand even before mechanical snow removal equipment can be deployed.
Bus service in the region remains severely affected. Limited-Stop bus service remains suspended. Very limited local and express service is operating with serious delays, and suspensions in service especially in Southern Brooklyn, Staten Island and Queens.
In addition, some routes have been shortened due to street conditions. Those conditions are being evaluated on a route by route basis. We will only restore service where we can safely do so. Due to conditions buses may not be able to pull directly into bus stops. Use caution boarding and alighting and do not run for buses.
With the utter ineptitude showed by the city in their storm cleanup efforts, I fully expect it to be a few days before bus service is back to normal.
Many of the outer boroughs have the majority of their streets nearly impassible. When the biggest thoroughfares in boroughs have barely been plowed, you can’t expect the rest of the streets to have been.
It is a shame that millions of residents are getting the royal shaft from the city in terms of proper cleanup. Hopefully things will get back to normal soon for the sanity of everyone.
