A New Extreme Commuter
As you know by now, I am a big fan of the AMNY Extreme Commuter series which highlights the extreme commutes which some tri-state residents go through to get to & from work. The MTA Is In Deep Doodoo
This sentiment was shared by a member of a panel which met this past Thursday to discuss post congestion pricing solutions for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). Em Whitney of the New York Observer filed this report:

“The congestion pricing plan proposed by Mayor Bloomberg failed to gain approval in the State Legislature in the spring,” said Kellner, who was a vocal proponent of congestion pricing. “Neither the plan’s supporters nor its critics seem to have a firm idea of what to do next.”

MTA Talks About Select Bus Service

You might enjoy reading these related entries:MTA New York City Transit, in collaboration with NYC Department of Transportation (DOT), is rolling out Select Bus Service (SBS), a new type of rapid bus operation employing advance fare payment, dedicated travel lanes and traffic signal priority. Bronx bus customers along the Bx12 route will be the first to benefit from this new type of service which is designed to be faster, more reliable and more efficient than current bus operations.
The introduction of Select Bus Service to the Bx12 is the culmination of a three-year collaborative effort among NYC Transit, DOT, and the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT). Bx12 SBS replaces limited-stop service along the Bx12 route between 207th Street, Broadway in Manhattan and the Bay Plaza Mall in the Bronx. This service will be the first of several similar corridors throughout the city.

Metro-North Increases Service For Independence Day

The Metro-North has issued a press release about the planned service increase for the Independence Day holiday. Here are the details courtesy of the MTA:

And MTA Metro-North Railroad is providing extra service for early getaways and for people coming into New York to watch the fireworks spectacular.
There will be many additional customers using Metro-North trains from Grand Central on Thursday, July 3. And these additional customers as well as the every day customers are expected to leave earlier than usual.
In fact, during the 12 noon through 4 p.m. time frame when 12,000 customers climb aboard trains departing Grand Central, those numbers are expected to triple to 36,000 on Thursday, July 3rd.
In order to accommodate everyone’s getaway needs, Metro-North will be providing 6 additional Hudson Line departures from 1:45 p.m. through 5:59 p.m.; 5 additional Harlem Line departures from 1:45 p.m. through 6:10 p.m.; and 10 New Haven Line departures from 1:04 p.m. through 5:59 p.m.

Subway Delays Up 44%
If you poll a thousand straphangers & asked if they felt subway delays were up, I would bet at least 80% of people would say yes. If they did, they would be 100% correct as subway delays are up 44% according to the latest statistics from New York City Transit. Clemente Lisi of the New York Post has more details:

Train delays have shot up a whopping 44 percent, with track work – and straphangers holding doors – the leading causes, according to new NYC Transit statistics.
There were 15,158 trains thrown off their schedules during April, the last month for which figures were available.
That compares to 10,559 in the same month last year.
