LIRR To Cancel 21 Trains For PM Rush
Due to the LIRR derailment yesterday, the agency has announced it will cancel 21 trains as part of the PM rush. Here are the complete details via press release:
Following the Monday evening derailment of a Long Island Rail Road train in Amtrak’s East River tunnels, the LIRR is canceling 21 trains that normally originate at Penn Station between 3:27 and 7:01 PM. The LIRR normally operates 130 rush hour trains, and will operate normal service out of Atlantic Terminal, Brooklyn, and Hunterspoint Avenue, Queens. One train that normally originates in Penn Station will originate instead at Atlantic Terminal.
LIRR personnel re-railed and removed the derailed train early this morning. Amtrak crews will continue working throughout the overnight hours to repair 500 feet of track tracks and switches damaged by the derailment. If they are able to complete the repairs and return the tunnel to service, LIRR expects to be able to provide a near-normal rush hour tomorrow morning. If the tunnel remains out of service, LIRR expects to implement a plan similar to Tuesday’s morning rush hour, in which 34 trains were cancelled or diverted.

Yesterday’s Derailment and Evacuation:
The train that derailed yesterday was the 5:51 p.m. departure for Hempstead, which had departed from Track 14. It was a 10-car train carrying as many as 800 people, but only the middle two cars derailed.
Passengers in the rear four cars evacuated by safely stepping down to the tracks in the presence of LIRR personnel and first responders, and then walking back to the platform at Penn Station. Passengers in the front six cars evacuated with the help of an NJ Transit train that pulled up to the front end of the train. Passengers walked single-file into the NJ Transit train, which then pulled eastward and made a reverse move back to Penn Station.
Travel Alternative:
As an alternative, customers may wish to board trains at Atlantic Terminal or Jamaica. MTA New York City Transit will cross-honor fares at 34 St-Penn Station so LIRR customers can take the 2 or 3 subway to Atlantic Terminal or the E subway to Jamaica.
