Mass Transit Options For Thanksgiving Events
Tomorrow is the day that really kicks off the festivities for Thanksgiving. With the big parade on Thanksgiving itself, many people gather the day before so they can watch the parade balloons being inflated. If you are going to this or any other event, mass transit is your best option:
The fun begins on the Upper West Side as the balloons for the 85th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade are inflated Wednesday, November 23 from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. The event is held on Central Park West between 71st and 81st Streets, as well as on 77th, 81st Streets and Columbus Avenue between 77th Street and 81st Street. The closest subway stations are the 1 at 79th Street and the B, C, at 81st Street.
Selected north and southbound A and D trains will operate as locals and extra trains will be made available as needed. We ask that customers consider their fellow riders and not hold subway doors open as this creates delays. The area is also served by the M7, M10, M11 and M79 bus routes.
The big parade kicks off at 9 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day at 77th Street and Central Park West and travels to 7th Avenue/Herald Square. There will be additional service on the 42nd Street S shuttle as well as increased early morning service on the 1 line.
Heavily affected stations will be those along the parade route from 79th Street to 34th Street on the 1, 2, 3 and A, C, E lines. We will monitor the situation for crowding and reroute express trains to the local track as needed. These bus routes serve the area and will be affected by reroutes and/or delays: M5, M7, M10, M16, M20, M34, M42, M57, M66, M72 M104, Q104, QM5, QM6, Q32, X1 and BxM2.
